Why Anchorage trumps LA

Anchorage is an ugly city, but then so is LA. A quick day trip about 45 miles outside of ANC put me on a Glacier. 45 miles outside of LA gets you what?

But then, can LA beat Alaska for kitsch? We drove past this (Igloo) on the Parks Highway heading north to Fairbanks last week. Took a snapshot on the way back.

UPDATE 001: The Igloo was built by Leon Smith and his wife Elizabeth. As far as I can tell work on The Igloo started in 1972. Leon and his wife hoped to cash in on traffic on the, then, recently completed Parks Highway. From what I've read the Igloo hotel was never occupied. Leon Smith, a WWII veteran, died in 1999. I need to do more research.

Sunset

I wasn't happy with the image I posted last night ("Wet Deck") so I deleted it. This one is much better.

Thanks for the memories

Found this in a mass mailing piece that arrived at my house this week from Bed Bath & Beyond. No doubt the oh so hip "digital generation" might well be forgotten because nobody is putting their pictures and films in easily accessible "shoe boxes" anymore. How many folks will bother to fire up mom's old computer when she's dead - you know, the one with a floppy drive, MS-Windows 98 installed and no USB port - and then pick through all of the folders that might have pictures in them and try to figure out which ones mom took? Oh, BTW, the mailing from Bed Bath & Beyond was addressed to "Our Neighbor." [give me a break]

Yeah baby - RAIN

How long has it been since it last rained: 7 months, 8 months? How wonderful, the sound, the smell, it's finally spring!

Sidewalk Ice Garden

"There is an old anti-intellectual joke, first related by Plato (!) about the still-earlier Greek philosopher Thales who fell into a ditch while walking through a field because he was too busy staring up at the heavens to notice what was under his feet."
